CENTER FOR CHILDHOOD CREATIVITY

Book of Activities for K5 Educators & Accompanying White Paper

My Role: Editor, Publisher, Graphic Designer, Social Media Manager

Collaborators: CCC researchers, Disney Foundation, library and school educators, graphic design partner

Background

Thanks to a grant from the Disney Foundation, we authored a creativity-based activities resource for library educators. The Center for Childhood Creativity at the Bay Area Discovery Museum is the museum’s research and advisory division. The CCC works at a national scale to advocate for the critical importance of creativity development in childhood. It is committed to advancing its empirical, high-quality research and advising to schools, museums, libraries, and other non-profits, as well as companies (such as Disney) that directly influence children’s development.

Goals

  1. Publish an online (and printable) resource of activities for library educators, in partnership with Disney and the California State Librarian.

  2. Design a layout for the activities that includes a legend, resources, links to research, and citations.

  3. Increase awareness of the CCC through social media, museum publications and signage, collaborations and partnerships, and special events.

Successes

  1. Designed and published a 96-page digital publication that was marketed to California state libraries, museum educators, and other influential groups.

  2. Grew social media followers and established the CCC as a thought leader in childhood creativity and development.

My Process

  1. Create a framework for categorizing and labeling the activities, then design a Legend infographic using the brand guidelines established by my partner graphic designer.

  2. Design a compelling and easy to read layout for the activity pages.

  3. Review the initial wire frame with the CCC and make edits.

  4. Use Adobe InDesign to create the interactive, longform document.
